Environmental degradation is there for all to see. The concept of environmental respect, i.e. the desire to protect and improve the quality of the environment in which we live, then emerges.

This is a fundamental value for the well-being of present and future generations, but also for the preservation of biodiversity, natural resources and the climate.

In this article we will look at what environmental friendliness is, why it is important and give some practical tips on how to practise it in everyday life.

What is environmental respect?

Environmental respect is the set of practices and habits aimed at reducing the negative impact of human activities on the environment. It can also be defined as «human conduct that takes into account the consequences of one’s actions on natural conditions and other forms of life». It also has ethical, social and economic dimensions.

Environmental respect is based on a number of fundamental principles:

Why it’s important

Environmental respect is important because it helps preserve the beauty and diversity of nature, sources of inspiration, culture and well-being for humanity. It also improves people’s quality of life by reducing problems related to pollution, climate change, scarcity of natural resources and infectious diseases.

7 points guide to environmental respect

Each of us can contribute to environmental respect through simple but meaningful gestures.

Here is our 7 points guide on environmental respect.

environmental respect

1. Waste reduction and recycling

Choose products with less packaging, use reusable containers and practice home composting. Recycle waste by separating it according to type (paper and cardboard, plastic, metal, organic waste) and dispose of it in the appropriate containers.

2. Sustainable mobility

Give preference to public transport, cycling or walking and, when possible, electric or hybrid vehicles. Avoid using your private car to get from one place to another.

3. Energy efficiency

Switch off lights when not needed, use low energy or LED bulbs and A+ appliances. Avoid keeping appliances on stand-by.

4. No to wasting water

Don’t waste water! Use it to brush your teeth or hands. Install adjustable taps or rainwater collection systems.

5. Yes to ecosustainability

For shopping and taking products from the supermarket to your home, use cloth bags instead of plastic.

6. Reducing food waste

Reduce food waste by buying only what you really need and consume it by the use-by date.

7. Zero km products

Choose zero-km products, avoiding those from faraway countries or with degrading working conditions.

The role of companies

Companies have an equally crucial role in promoting environmental friendliness. Through innovation and research, they can in fact develop technologies that reduce the environmental impact of production activities. A virtuous example is offered by IPPO Engineering, a software house specialised in environmental technologies.

IPPO Engineering: software to serve the environment

IPPO Engineering is actively engaged in the creation of software dedicated to the blue economy, renewable energy and energy efficiency. This is what we are all about:

Software for the blue economy

We develop software for marine ecosystem monitoring, advanced robotics systems and maritime trade.

Energy efficiency projects

We were a partner in the STEP-2-SPORT project, which aimed to implement “Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB)” sports buildings.
