Compared to the Fordist era, it implies a paradigm shift, which can be translated into a continuous promotion of ecological practices.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7901653 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7901653\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is meant by environmental sustainability?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-07eda0e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"07eda0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn the <strong>1980s<\/strong>, economist <strong>Herman Daly <\/strong>said what the characteristics of a sustainable system should be. The theory, known as &#8216;<em>Herman Daly&#8217;s three rules<\/em>&#8216;, holds that:\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89a741c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"89a741c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ol><li>for sustainable use of resources, the <strong>rhythm<\/strong> of use should be less than the rate at which they regenerate;<\/li><li>the depletion of non-renewable resources should be offset by a shift to <strong>fully renewable resources<\/strong>;<\/li><li>for a sustainable emission rate of waste and scrap, the rate at which they are produced should not exceed the <strong>time <\/strong>it takes nature to dispose of them.<\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d1b2182 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d1b2182\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Concept of environmental sustainability history<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d1f2925 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d1f2925\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The concept of sustainability is not new but has much older origins. In one of his essays, <strong>Jacobus Du Pisani<\/strong>, Professor of History at the <strong>North-West University <\/strong>in <strong>Potchefstroom <\/strong>(South Africa), states that some philosophers (such as <strong>Plato <\/strong>and <strong>Pliny the Elder<\/strong>) were already talking about it between the 5th and 1st centuries BC. Philosophers were aware of the damage caused to the environment by human activities and, therefore, debated practices to protect its &#8216;<strong>eternal youth<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p><p>Rather, with the industrial revolutions, the idea spread that technological progress was leading humanity towards a mythical &#8216;<strong>golden age<\/strong>&#8216;. With time, however, certain doubts and concerns also emerged about the environmental and social consequences of <strong>uncontrolled development<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Examples of this are the essays dealing with these topics in the 18th century. Among many, we mention &#8216;<em>Sylvicultura Oeconomica<\/em>&#8216; written by <strong>Hans Carl von Carlowitz <\/strong>in <strong>1713<\/strong>, in which the term &#8216;<strong>sustainable use<\/strong>&#8216; appears for the first time, which the author uses to indicate the need to replace cut trees with new ones.<\/p><p>In those years, several publications touched on similar themes, such as <strong>Thomas Malthus&#8217; <\/strong>&#8216;<em>An Essay on the Principle of Population<\/em>&#8216; (<strong>1798<\/strong>). In this work, the English economist expounded on the problem of excessive population growth in relation to the resources available at the time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2770c1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e2770c1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Development cannot go on forever<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e720c8b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e720c8b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The idea that development should be regulated emerged in <strong>1969<\/strong>, when <strong>sustainable development <\/strong>was mentioned for the first time in an official document, signed by <strong>33 African countries<\/strong>.<\/p><p>That same year, the <strong>United States <\/strong>established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Environmental Protection Agency<\/strong><\/a> (<strong>EPA<\/strong>), whose guidelines influenced the first environmental theories, globally.<\/p><p>In <strong>1992, <\/strong>however, at the <strong>UN Conference in Rio de Janeiro<\/strong>, the definition of environmental sustainability contained in the <strong>1987 UN Brundtland Report <\/strong>was expanded to include the concepts of <strong>social justice <\/strong>and <strong>equity<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c43a12 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1c43a12\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" elementor-size-default\">From 21 Agenda to 2030 Agenda<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-768582e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"768582e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The concepts already mentioned are enshrined in <strong>21<\/strong> <strong>Agenda<\/strong>, a document adopted in <strong>1992 <\/strong>by <strong>170 countries <\/strong>to define the guidelines for sustainable development in the early 2000s.<\/p><p>In <strong>2015<\/strong>, 21 Agenda was replaced by <strong>2030<\/strong> <strong>Agenda<\/strong>, a document signed by the governments of the <strong>193 UN member states <\/strong>and approved by the UN General Assembly.<\/p><p>The document outlines 17 sustainable development goals, also called <strong>Sustainable Development Goals <\/strong>(<strong>SDGs<\/strong>), to be achieved by <strong>2030<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The goals of 2030 Agenda are global and concern and involve all countries and all components of society, from public administration (PA) to private individuals and industries.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-91bcb4f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"91bcb4f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Goals pursued by environmental sustainability<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-010ab3b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"010ab3b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe main objectives that
